Following the successful completion of the first ten energy upgrades in public school buildings participating in the project "Creating Zero Energy Schools", another Agreement was signed on October 13, 2025, at the premises of the Cyprus Energy Office (CEO), concerning the next two schools that will be upgraded to the Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB) level.

Specifically, the construction company HOUSEMASTERS Ltd. is the contractor of the 5th Tender for the said project, which will undertake the energy upgrade of two school buildings in the Famagusta district:

  • 3rd Primary School of Deryneia
  • Public and Community Kindergarten of Vrysoulla

The contracting company signed the contract documents in the presence of the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Public Works Corporation, Mr. Andreas Kitromilidis, and the Director of the National Public Works Corporation, Mr. Savvas Vlachou. The start date of the works was also agreed, which will be on October 27, 2025. The total amount of the contract amounts to 828,800.00 euros plus VAT.

A few words about the project

Through the Cohesion Policy Program "THALEA 2021-2027", the construction part of the project is co-financed. The part concerning technical support is financed through the European Union's PDA (Project Development Assistance) program of Horizon 2020 and by the project PEDIA.

The project “Creating Zero Energy Schools” approaches the needs of school buildings in Cyprus comprehensively and comprehensively, in order to upgrade them in terms of energy efficiency and, at the same time, to resolve chronic and long-standing problems, such as heating, air conditioning, lighting and ventilation.

The PEDIA project is coordinated by the National Education Commission, in collaboration with the Education Unit for the Environment and Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MEYS), undertaking a wide range of actions, aiming to improve the energy efficiency and comfort conditions of at least 25 public school buildings in Cyprus, thus contributing to the achievement of the country's National and European energy and climate goals.
