Savvas Vlachos started his professional career in 2004. He is an Environmental Engineer, graduated from the Polytechnic School of Crete, Greece, and he acquired his master’s degree on Civil Engineering at the Polytechnic Department of the University of Cyprus. At the beginning of his career, he worked as an environmental engineer, and he was responsible for preparing environmental impact assessment for development projects, as well as designing waste treatment facilities.
He joined the Cyprus Energy Agency in 2009 as an Energy Expert, and he was involved in studies, audits, certifications, and procurements related with energy efficiency in buildings, Sustainable Energy Action Plans for local authorities, and Renewable Energy Sources technologies. He has skills, knowledge, and experience on energy analysis of buildings and other infrastructures. In addition, he is experienced for the use of technical equipment, such as Infrared Camera, power analyser, gas analyser, etc.
He is registered as a Qualified Expert for issuing Energy Performance Certificates for residential buildings in Cyprus. Furthermore, he was registered as an Energy Auditor on the official government’s registry in Cyprus for the period from January 2014 to February 2020, where he gained extensive experience in energy audits. As of February 2020, he has been assigned as a member of the Energy Auditors’ Committee, under the Ministry of Energy, Commerce, and Industry.
He is also a certified trainer by the Human Resources Development Authority of Cyprus, with previous experience on training for various technical subjects, such as energy efficiency of buildings and certification, feasibility studies, project management, photovoltaic technology, environmental policies, and sustainable energy planning.
Since September 2016, he is the Director of the Cyprus Energy Agency, and he is responsible for the operation and the strategic development of the Agency. He has participated in more than 35 EU funded projects as project manager, and he is currently the coordinator of a 2,7 M€ funded project (EEA and Norway grants) on youth employment, with 7,5 international partners. He is also the Project Manager of a contract for Project Development Assistance (funded by the European Commission) to be provided to Cyprus’ Ministry of Education, Sport, and Youth, in order to trigger investments of 25 Μ € in upgrading XNUMX school buildings into Nearly Zero Energy Buildings.
From 2022, he is the coordinator on behalf of the Cyprus Energy Agency for the implementation of four investments approved for funding under the Recovery and Resilience Facility in Cyprus, to promote energy transition and climate adaptation in local authorities, to tackle energy poverty for disabled people, and to mainstream the installation of publicly accessible EV charging stations.
The 14th of June 2022, he was elected as Vice-President for Smart and Sustainable Islands of FEDARENE; the European network of regional/local authorities, energy agencies and organizations for energy and environment.
