4 additional communities joined the Climate Adaptation effort after securing funding from the Grant Scheme for Strengthening the Resilience and Adaptation of Communities to Climate Change. These are the Communities of Kokkinotrimithia, Kannavia, Psevda and Pyrga.
All 4 communities submitted an application under the B' investment category of the Grants Plan, Investments to strengthen the Adaptation and Resilience of Communities to Climate Change, with the application of the Pyrgos Community focusing more on the C' category, Investments in Sustainable Mobility infrastructure.
Specifically, the Pyrga Community seeks to create a route that will connect the urban area with an existing nature trail. The project includes tree planting and installation of urban equipment along the path, such as benches, fountains and markings (direction and planting). A bicycle rack will be installed at the starting point of the path, while at the top of the hill, which is a stop for most users, a pergola with climbing plants and additional urban equipment, such as waste separation baskets and benches, will be installed.

The Community Council Lies will utilize the resources it secured from the Plan to upgrade 3 community parks with tree plantings and urban equipment. Similarly, the Kokkinotrimithia Community will transform an area next to the Nicosia-Troodos intercity road, on the side of the urban center, into a park with mainly endemic trees, which will provide shade in conditions of intense sunlight and high water absorption in cases of flooding. The project also includes urban equipment, such as tables, benches and waste separation baskets.
The Cannabis will focus on natural shading solutions in 4 different parts of the Community - the outdoor area of the Church of the Redemption, the Platoma area, the picnic area and the square with the Heroes' Monument. A pergola with climbing plants will be installed in all 4 parts, while the work in the outdoor area of the church will also include tree planting.
The Presidents of the Community Councils of Pyrga, Psevda and Kannavia and their consultants, after signing the Public Funding Agreement, met today, Monday, January 27, at the Energy Office premises, for the formal meeting to get to know each other and answer key questions, before implementing their projects.

The Grant Scheme for Strengthening the Resilience and Adaptation of Communities to Climate Change is included in the National Recovery & Resilience Plan and is funded by the EU Recovery & Resilience Mechanism (Next Generation EU), with a total budget of €2.900.000. The implementing body of the Plan is the Cyprus Energy Office and the supporting body is the Union of Cyprus Communities.
It is worth mentioning that by the application deadline, 29 Community Councils had applied to the Scheme and 15 of them had secured funds to implement Climate Adaptation actions. In addition to the above, the list also includes the Community Councils of Kliros, Akapnoi, Pano and Kato Deftera, Mammari, Paleometochos, Psimolofou, and Agia Marina Xyliato, and the Municipal Districts of Lympia (Municipality of South Nicosia-Idali), Kelli (Municipality of Aradippou) and Voroklini (Municipality of Larnaca). Six additional applications are under consideration.
