A further four Public Funding Agreements were signed on Friday 1 November 2024, bringing the number of applications that secured funding from the Strengthening Resilience and Community Adaptation to Climate Change Scheme to seven. The other three signed earlier last September.

The new Communities that secured funding are the Community of Paleometochos, the Community of Pano Deutera, the Community of Mammari and the Municipal District of Kellia (formerly the Municipality of Aradippou) - all of them with Category B investments of the Grant Scheme (Investments to strengthen the Adaptation and Resilience of Communities to Climate Change). A week after the signing of the Public Agreements -specifically, on November 7-, the Aldermen and the Deputy Mayor, respectively, together with their scholars, attended the premises of the Cyprus Energy Office, to answer key questions and thereby signal the way to start the work to implement their investments.

Using funding from the Scheme, the Old Shareholder Community Council will upgrade two community parks, enriching them with trees for further shade, and installing civic equipment to enhance visitor comfort and increase footfall.

The Pano Deutera Community Council, on the other hand, intends to upgrade two pieces of land. In one block he will place developed trees, combined with the existing planting, as well as urban equipment and pergolas with climbing plants. In the second section, which is expected to function as a new green space, general planting and placement of urban equipment and pergolas is intended.

Similarly, the Mammari Community Council intends to upgrade three spaces within the Community's urban area, which are accessible to the public, into spaces that will function as green cores. The areas will be upgraded with tree plantings and urban equipment.

Finally, the Municipal District of Kellion will use the resources of the Plan to upgrade two green areas by planting trees and installing new urban equipment.

It is worth reminding that the Plan in question is the 1nd which concerns the financing of climate change adaptation investments at the local level, the result of an initiative of the Cyprus Energy Office, in collaboration with the Union of Cyprus Communities. The Plan was developed in the broader context of national and community policies for adaptation to climate change, while aiming to strengthen the communities' resilience to climate change and increase the level of citizens' well-being.

The Plan included in the National Recovery & Resilience Plan, and is financed by the EU Recovery & Resilience Mechanism (Next Generation EU), with a budget of €2.9 million.

Applications for participation in the Scheme will continue to be accepted electronically, through the website https://communities-adapt.cea.org.cy/, up to and including 15 November, or until the available budget is exhausted, whichever comes first.
