The EIT Climate-KIC program Young Innovators Cyprus 2022 (YICY2022) invites the educators of Middle, Secondary, and Technical Education in Cyprus, either of public or private schools, with students aged between 12 and 18 and regardless of their subject-matter, to express their interest to participate in the program.

By participating in the program, teachers will gain specialized knowledge in the field of climate change, as well as experience with special educational tools that they could then use in their classrooms, to inspire their students to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle and seek innovative solutions to address and adapt to climate challenges.

The YICY2022 is supported by the official EIT Climate-KIC Young Innovators  program and is co-financed by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). The coordinators of the program in Cyprus are the Cyprus Energy Agency, and the Cyprus University of Technology.

Program Objectives

The program aims to support students aged 12-18, to develop skills and competencies of the 21th century, in relation to climate innovation, and under the umbrella of Problem-based Learning.

Among other competencies, the program promotes:

  • systemic thinking and analysis,
  • critical thinking,
  • creative problem solving, and
  • entrepreneurship for social and climate innovation.

Program Structure

The YICY2022 has three (3) stages:

Stage 1: Train-the-Trainers Workshop

During this stage, the participating students will be trained on the phenomenon of climate change and its effects, and via references to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be inspired to use the program’s toolbox to develop sustainable and long-lasting solutions for existing climate challenges. (Estimated implementation period: July 2022)

Stage 2: Young Innovators

At this stage, the student participants are informed about climate change and its effects, but also about the European Union's sustainable development goals. Next, they use the program tools (visual tools) to identify solutions that respond to real climate challenges in a fair, sustainable and timeless way. (Estimated implementation period: October - November 2022)

Stage 3: Young Climathon

During this stage, students who participated in the previous stage, as well as other students of the same profile, who are willing to form teams and compete for the best climate solution based on multiple criteria, will use the program’s toolbox to ideate a solution for an existing climate challenge. The winners claim prizes and the opportunity to develop their idea with the support of the challenge-owners. (Estimated implementation period: November - December 2022)
