Lefkonos 2-12, 1011 Nicosia

Climate change and its effects are intensifying and no one is left to deal with them. Especially the new generation, which will be called to live with the consequences of climate change.

For this reason, on Friday and Saturday 27-28 November and 4-5 December, the partners of EIT Climate-KIC (Climate Change Knowledge and Innovation Community) in Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology, and Cyprus Energy Agency,, held two online climatic competitions Young Climathon, giving the opportunity to young people aged 12-18 from all over Cyprus to propose solutions to address the phenomenon of food waste, but also for the rational management of organic waste. The ultimate goal is the sustainability of ideas, so that they can be indirect catalysts against the phenomenon of Climate Change and its effects.

The Young Climathon is the culmination of the EIT Climate-KIC program Young Innovators , both of which are applied for the first time in Cyprus. Learning from the challenge, professionals and experts around the challenge, participants (public and private school students) were asked to work in teams using the Young Innovators visualization and systems innovation tools to analyze the various aspects of the challenge and create a plan to resolve it.

In the first competition, held in the Greek language, the first prize was won by the team "PathFinders", consisting of students of Apostolos Markos High School in Nicosia and the Colossi Regional High School in Limassol, while the second prize was won by the team "Green Hearts" from Mitsi School of Lemythos. In the second competition, held in English, the first prize went to the team "Enviro-Mentally Stable" from the Senior School of Nicosia and the second the team "Mythical Dwarves" with students from the Senior School of Nicosia and the School of Mitsi Lemythos. As one of the students of the winning team "Enviro-Mentally Stable" stated: "I am happy, because this is the first time we participate in a competition where we have the opportunity to analyze a multidimensional problem and create solutions around it!"
