Although local authorities in Cyprus have implemented Sustainable Energy Action Plans and are committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions up to 2020, they face financial difficulties in implementing sustainable energy projects, in particular through traditional funding mechanisms.
The main goal of the LOCAL4GREEN project is to support the Local Authorities to implement green policies and in particular green taxes or practices for the wider promotion of RES in their territory. The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg MED Program (2014-2020). From Cyprus, the Cyprus Energy Agency participates as a partner and as support partners (associated partners) the Municipalities of Nicosia, Lakatamia, Aradippou and the Community of Lythrodonta.
On 22-23 November 2017, 1 was heldη a technical meeting of the LOCAL4GREEN project partners in Cyprus, where the main factors influencing the implementation of green practices in Local Authorities were analyzed. Also, the project partners had the opportunity to meet with staff from the Municipality of Nicosia and to inform them about the Municipality's green policy and the objectives they have set with 2030 as well as the approach that the Municipality has in implementing the green taxation .
By the end of 2017, the Local Authorities participating in the project will have an integrated Green Tax Implementation Plan which they will need to implement with the ambition to promote and support the implementation of sustainable energy projects.
