The events for the European Week of Sustainable Urban Mobility in Limassol, organized by the Municipality of Limassol, in collaboration with the Cyprus Energy Office and the European Climate Pact, as well as with the support of organizations such as Friends of the Earth Cyprus, RESET and the Running-Fluent Initiative, were completed with great success. Hundreds of citizens participated in activities aimed at promoting sustainable urban mobility and raising awareness of environmentally friendly travel options.
From the 16th to the 22nd of September, the streets of Limassol were filled with interactive events, such as cycling tracks, accessible walks and collective art projects, with the participation of people of all ages. The events culminated on Saturday, September 21, with the closure of Independence Avenue, which helped create a pedestrian and bike-friendly zone, encouraging citizens to enjoy a car-free day.
Highlights of the Event:
- Closure of Independence Avenue: Transforming it into a pedestrian and cyclist friendly zone, inviting families to walk and cycle freely in the center of Limassol.
- Children's Games and Art Activities: Interactive games such as Jenga, group painting and a bike track for the kids.
- Cycling under the Light of the Full Moon: A magical evening bike ride under the light of the full moon.
- Accessibility Walk: Documenting the challenges faced by people with disabilities on the streets of Limassol, followed by a public discussion.
Many citizens participated in the activities, while children of all ages had the opportunity to play in specially designed areas, taking part in artistic activities and games such as Jenga. On the other hand, adults tried alternative means of transport, such as Next Bike's electric buses and bicycles, exploring environmentally friendly transport solutions.
In the context of the events, he was also present Mayor of Limassol, Mr. Yiannis Armevtis, who highlighted the need for a more sustainable and accessible city for all, encouraging the use of public transport and alternative forms of mobility such as scootering, inline skating, cycling and walking, with the aim of reducing the use of cars, where it is the main means of transport for citizens, with a rate of over 93%.
As he says Daniel Barasa, Ambassador of the European Climate Pact in Cyprus, as well as Founder of the Running – Fluent Initiative, who is an active member of the community and organized the Cycling under the light of the full moon, “The Full Moon Bike Ride is a shining example of how a community can come together to embrace sustainable mobility while promoting solidarity and environmental awareness. The event proves that cycling can be both a practical transport solution and a tool to strengthen the community.”
The Municipality of Limassol, in collaboration with the Cyprus Energy Office, the European Climate Pact, NextBike and local organizations, looks forward to the continuation of these efforts to make Limassol a model of sustainable mobility!
