The Cyprus Energy Agency and the Municipality of Strovolos have successfully co-organized a training seminar on "Innovative funding plans to support sustainable energy projects in Local Authorities", on November 17, 2017, at the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Strovolos. The seminar was supported by the city network "Energy Cities", the Covenant of Mayors and the European projects GreenS (funding from Horizon 2020) and LOCAL4GREEN (co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg MED Program (2014-2020 ).
The seminar participants, mostly Municipal Authorities, had the opportunity to learn about innovative funding projects and tools that have been successfully tested in various European cities. Specifically, the participants had the opportunity in an interactive training to be informed:
- How to Create an Internal Financing System
- How to create a soft loan scheme
- How to Benefit from Green Public Procurement
- How Green Taxes Can Fund Sustainable Energy Actions by Municipalities
The major part of the seminar concerned the training of mechanics on funding, which was held by the Energy Cites speaker, Perrine Ethuin, specializing in Innovative Local Government Financing Plans.
Then followed the presentation by Dr. Konstantinos Vrachimis, Head of the Product Development Service of the Cooperative Bank, regarding the financing of energy projects in Cyprus. The training seminar ended with presentations by Mr. Savvas Vlachos, Director of the Cyprus Energy Agency and Mr. Haris Kordatos, Environment and European Affairs Officer, on how Green Policies (Green Procurement, Green Taxation) can finance actions of the Municipalities.
