The workshop for the Covenant of Mayors on Climate and Energy was successfully organized by the Cyprus Citizens' Energy Bureau. The conference was held at 8 December 2016 in Nicosia, with invited distinguished speakers from Cyprus and abroad.
On behalf of Environment Commissioner Ms. Ioanna Panagiotou, Mr. Xenios Agathocleous addressed the greeting. The speech of the Director of the Environment Department, Mr. Kostas Hatzipanagiotou and Mr. Theodoulos Mesimeris was also addressed by the Department of the Environment.
Distinguished speakers from abroad gave a different dimension to the workshop, transferring their experiences to the attending audience, which consisted mainly of representatives of local authorities. David Donner, representing the Covenant of Mayors initiative, presented new policies on tackling climate change and adapting to climate change and the results of the Energy Efficiency Watch study. Mr. Kostas Komninos, Director of the Sustainable Islands Network of the Aegean and Ionian Islands, presented the good practices and experiences of implementing the Energy Action Plans in the Islands of Europe as well as the Smart Islands initiative.
The workshop was closed with Mrs. Ylva EK by the East Swedish Energy Agency, which presented sustainable energy efficiency, waste management, renewable energy and sustainable mobility practices in the municipalities of Sweden.
The conference was supported by the Energy Cities network, the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy and the European project "Beyond Sustainable Energy Strategies", co-funded through the European Union's Intelligent Energy Program.
The event was also supported by the Strovolos and Lakatamis Municipalities through the LIFE program and the LIFE UrbanProof project.
