At 19-20 December of 2016, the inaugural meeting of the European project was held at Sapienza University in Rome PRISMI "promoting RES Integration forum Smart Mediterranean Islands"- Promoting the integration of Renewable Energy Sources in the Intelligent Mediterranean Energy Systems. This project aims to support the local authorities of the Mediterranean islands in developing plans aimed at their cost-effective transition to low-carbon energy systems.

Project activities benefit from European funding under the "1th Call for Proposals "of the trans-European European Cooperation Program for the Mediterranean region," Interreg MED 2014-2020 ". The European Union with € 509.637 helps support the project by 85% of the total budget of € 599.573.

In particular, the PRISMI project aims at developing an integrated toolbox (based on a transnational approach) that will be able to evaluate and map Renewable Energy Sources to better elaborate and develop scenarios and techno-economic analysis for the implementation of RES projects. In order to ensure the exploitation of this toolbox on various Mediterranean islands, the project provides for the study of five different island regions characterized by different environmental, economic and energy characteristics: Favignana (Italy), Korčula (Croatia) Tilos Island (Greece), Akamas Peninsula (Cyprus) and Gozo Island (Malta).

The 18 month duration project is headed by the Sapienza University of Rome and six other European partners:

  • Center for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES)
  • University of Zagreb
  • Cyprus Energy Agency
  • Piraeus University of Technology - Technological Sector
  • Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency; Energy Intelligent Energy Management Office of Malta (MIEMA)
  • Municipality of Favignana

Taking into account the involvement of local authorities, the main purpose of the program is to create a network in which all authorities, institutions, private and public authorities concerned can participate free of charge. Therefore, an exchange of know-how will be made through the network which will enable the development of strategies to increase the share of renewable energies in the Mediterranean islands and to raise awareness among local communities. In this context, the project also provides for the organization of events and stakeholder meetings. During such events / meetings, the results of the project will be analyzed and useful tools will be presented for the promotion and development of Renewable Energy Sources in the Mediterranean islands.
